The Background Mua Catholic Hospital is situated in the Dedza District of Central Malawi in South-East Africa. The Hospital was founded in 1911 and is one of many under-developed and under-resourced medical facilities in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in Africa. This 140-bed hospital treats about 7,500 patients annually and is the referral centre for eight local health centres serving a large area of rural Malawi.
The Project As the Hospital nears its 100th Anniversary, Dr Valerie Donnellys WOMEN OF MALAWI charity, in partnership with CRS Refrigeration Ltd.,Kildalkey Co. Meath, has embarked on a project to design, construct (in Ireland), equip and deliver a fully functioning operating theatre for Mua Hospital. A CRS technical team has already visited the site and established the feasibility of the project.
The theatre will be equipped with proven technology, sufficient to meet the surgical requirements of Mua Hospital CRS Refrigeration Ltd. will cover the maintenance costs for the theatre for a period of ten years.
The Mua Hospital Appeal is run by a voluntary committee.
This new theatre will provide much needed facilities for a population of over 130,000 in the Hospitals catchment area.
In a country where death during childbirth is all too common, expectant mothers will receive specialist care during delivery of their babies.
Urgently required medical assistance will be available faster and more conveniently.
