A word from Dr. Valerie Donnelly -
As an obstetrician, I am focused on maternal and infant mortality. In the developed world it is very rare for a woman to die in childbirth. However, in Malawi there is a high chance a woman will die having her baby as a result of inadequate facilities to perform operations such as caesarean sections. While there are well trained doctors in Mua, the facilities and equipment prevent them from being able to carry out life-saving procedures. There is a huge shortage of theatre space, no adequate operating table or resuscitation table for babies, a lack of instruments, no washing machine or sterilization equipment .
